William is a young man born to a merchant family at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. He is unsure of his path in life, but his destiny soon finds him.

Mary is a widow with a mysterious past, who soon catches William's eye. She is someone who has been hardened by life and is determined to survive at all costs. 

Marcus is a man of ambition who is determined to rise up the ranks of British Society at all costs. He is William's best friend, but how far will that friendship go when times get tough?
